When you first think about how to work from home, a vision of you in your flannel pj’s sipping coffee, I am sure is what comes to mind. I will say, you can do this if you want to, but most of us full time work from home crowds are extremely structured. Too many people fail, because they get so distracted, when working from home. Or, they over work themselves because they never establish boundaries. If you are preparing yourself, on how to work from home, you will want to stick around for this article.
Maybe, you have started working from home, and are struggling with structure. Either way, this article will be perfect for you.
How To Work From Home Successfully Step One:
The first step is getting your family on board. I would suggest going to staples, and grabbing up one of the big calenders, that can be placed in a common family area. This calendar is a fantastic way to keep everyone on the same page. I would also suggest color coating this calendar. Red = Kids activities, Blue = Family activities, Purple = Your Work times to not be interrupted and so on and so forth. I think you get the point with this. This sounds like such a small minor thing you may put on the back burner. Do not make that mistake. The second step to work from home successfully is the planning. If the entire family can glance at that calendar, and know what’s going on when, it will cause way less stress in the home. Less stress, means more time for you to focus. This will also mean way less interruptions for you while working at home. This way, everyone knows what is expected of them, and what hours they will need to fend for themselves around the house. Everyone needs to understand, the colors and calendar, and what will be expected of them on x, y and z days.
Step three, with family planning, is everyone understanding your business space. You need them to understand that when that door is closed, and the do not enter sign is up, this really means do not enter!! They need to respect this space just as if it was an office space. This means no barging in, no screaming and no interruptions unless someone is dying!
Once the family is on board, you are already one more step closer, on how to work from home successfully.
How To Work From Home Successfully Step Two:
Now that the family is all organized, it’s time for you to organize your time. It is extremely important to be very organized with your time. You will have so many temptations with working from home. You might be sitting at your desk, then glance over and see a huge mountain of laundry, and think, I can just go throw this in and come back to this. That is what you do not want to be doing all day. That 15 minute laundry break is cutting into your productive time.
Yes, working from home is awesome. But, you still need to treat it as if you were waking up, and entering the office for a full professional day. This means you have your schedule. Even though you are walking up, getting dressed and walking to your desk, you still need your time clock. Take 20 minutes in the morning and eat breakfast, sip your coffee and get dressed as if you were leaving for a work day. You might be thinking, Ugh! I want to work from home to not get dressed, so maybe I will skip this. I am not saying you need to be in a full on business professional outfit. I am saying, how you look and feel daily, will attribute to your success.
Sounds silly, right? It has been proven, that if we look and feel good, we are likely to be ten times more productive. If you want to be successful then dress for success! Get your mind right for the day.
Next is planning your time daily. Just as in an office, you need to plan your lunch and break times accordingly. This means you need to be fully focused from 8am – 6pm if that is what you set up as your work from home hours. No friends dropping by. No kids screaming and wanting to plan cowboys and Indian’s. No stepping away to do laundry. This is your business time.
I am not saying you can’t take breaks. Actually, you are more productive, if you do take breaks every hour. What I personally like to do is use a kitchen timer. You know, the circular white round timer. I bring that in my office, then I set it, for 50 minute increments. Once that dings I take a 15 minute break. I will walk the dog.
Maybe stretch out. Whatever. This is your mental break to refocus. Then, when my 15 minute ding goes off, I am back to another focused 50 minutes on the timer.
This is how I keep focused, throughout my entire business day, working from home.

How To Work From Home Successfully Step Three:
Step three, to attaining your goal to work from home, is all the other little things. Things like staying hydrated and eating healthy. This may again sound silly, but I assure you, it will make a difference. I always keep a large blender bottle at my desk. I know that this bottle is 20 ounces. I also know I should be drinking at least 6 of these daily. Keeping hydrated will keep you thinking clearly.Eating healthy is also important. Just like you plan your 15 minute break, you need to plan a lunch time too. Just because you are home does not mean you need to make a heavy 3 course meal! If you eat a heavy meal like this you will be tempted to take a siesta afterwards. Eat a nice light salad. This is healthy and will not make you lethargic for the rest of your business day.
How To Work Successfully From Home - Bonus
The other trap, a lot of other home based business owners make, is over working. Again, stick to your business hours. Just because you are home, does not mean, after dinner you go do a few more things. If that time is dedicated family time then that’s what you need to be doing. People who over work themselves tend to be way less productive. They get burnt out extremely quickly. This is ultimately going to lead to most people failing.Set yourself up for success and do not overwork yourself. Stick to your schedules.
Many people can work from home with ease. More and more companies are allowing employees to work from home, and more home based business owners, are working out of the home. How to work from home successfully will be how well you stick to these tips mentioned above.
