Is a Work From Home Data Entry Job Right for Me?

849-02877038Does the idea of wearing your sweatpants to work, making creamy gourmet coffee in your own coffee pot, eating breakfast while you powering up your computer in the morning, and not having your lunch stolen out of the BREAK ROOM sound good to you? It does to me, as well!

There are certainly a lot of perks to work from home data entry jobs. You save money on gas, save time by not commuting, don’t feel compelled to eat out as often (saving both money and your health,) and, in many cases, it’s not a problem to pick up kids from school or run errands on your own time!

Or perhaps you’re a person with a disability that makes it difficult to leave the house everyday, but you’re an otherwise intelligent and competent worker. Then work from home data entry jobs might just be the answer you’ve been looking for!

Are there more perks to work from home data entry jobs?

If you’re like me, sometimes perks get you so excited that you fail to assess a situation honestly. This one-sided view can sometimes make us overlook potential problems that could quickly change our minds! There are many things to consider before taking on a work from home data entry, and I’d like to go over a few here to help you make the right decision for yourself in the long run.

Is a Work From Home Data Entry Job Right for Me? Contemplate the following:

Privacy Requirements
One of the most important things to think about when weighing the pros and cons of a work from home data entry job is privacy. Do you have a room with a closed door where you can shut out distractions? Do you have children or pets that will demand your attention? Do you have neighbors that will bother you if they know you’re home? Here’s one that will require a little bit of introspection:

Do you have a difficult time turning that game or movie off when it’s time to go to work?

It’s often assumed that, if you’re home, that means you’re available. If there are people (or animals!) in your life that are unlikely to respect this boundary, then a work at home data entry job might not be for you (at least for now.)

If you don’t have a room where you can shut the door on your personal life and distractions, then you might find yourself worrying about bills or helping your child with homework during the time that you should be focused on your work.

When this happens, you find yourself scrambling to catch up. What’s worse is, this is how people often start blurring the line between personal life and work life.

You end up feeling like you’re working all of the time, and that’s an awful feeling! I mean, didn’t you want to work at home to save time in the first place?

If it’s going to cause more undue stress, then it’s probably not worth it!

Technical Requirements

Has your computer been around for a long while? Some employers require you to own a computer with certain specifications in order to run the programs they use for data entry. Some require a minimum amount of memory or RAM. Others won’t allow you to use a computer that’s more than six years old. If that’s the case, are you prepared to invest in another computer? If you’re job requires that you have Windows 7 and you have Windows XP, are you willing to upgrade?

In addition to computer requirements, there are often also restrictions on your internet connection. Many employers require that you have a hard wired internet connection. No wireless, especially if it’s borrowed. There may also be a minimum internet speed.

These are just a few examples of many possible variables. You might also run into requirements for things like functioning 2.0 USB ports, a minimum 17″ monitor, or possession of a flash drive for saving purposes. Make sure you ask about technical requirements before taking any position!

Time Requirements

Some work from home data entry jobs allow you to work on your own time and get paid per job you finish. Others have actual time requirements, or times that you need to be available to receive and finish work. Don’t just assume that every position allows you to work on your own time. Make sure you nail down what is expected of you time wise so that your work at home data entry position doesn’t end up being more stressful than just obtaining a job that you have to commute to.

Skill Requirements

Just what do you have to know to perform data entry, anyway? Well, we all know that most jobs in this day and age require a high school diploma or a GED.

Beyond that, most work from home data entry job require that you can type at certain speeds. This is for two reasons. The first reason is so that they receive your work in a timely manner. The second reason is so that you’re being paid fairly for your time.

For example’s sake, let’s say that two people are given a task of entering 500 names into a database. Also for example’s sake, let’s say that both will be paid $10 upon completion of the project. The first person is comfortable quickly navigating a keyboard and types at a rate of 50 words per minute. This person completes the task in one hour. The second person types 25 words per minute.

This person completes the task in two hours. There’s a big difference between $5 per hour and $10 per hour!

I know it can feel frustrating, but skill requirements are in your own best interest! You don’t want to work 12-16 hours per day for a barely livable wage!

So What Do You Think?

I really hope that this list has helped you get a bigger and better picture of what you might be getting into as a work from home data entry specialist. If none of these things seem like hoops to jump through to you, then a work from home data entry job might be right for you.
