The Working Mom V.S. The Stay At Home Mom

work from home5
Most people have this perception, that a stay at home mom, is nothing more than a housewife, but that's not true. They Think a “Working Mom” holds more value than a stay at home mom, is this true? Also, maybe you are planning to have your first child, and you are trying to decide what is best?

Should you be a stay at home mom or a working mom? In this article, I will be breaking down, the pros and cons to help you make a decision.

Let us start with the stay at home mom definition VS working mom:

Housewife: A housewife, AKA stay at home mom, is a woman whose main occupation is running or managing the family home- caring for and educating her children, cooking and storing food, buying goods the family needs in day to day life, cleaning and maintaining the home....etc. The term may sometimes be used derogatory sense, in contrast to a career woman. -Provided by Wikipedia

VS.

Working Mother: A woman who has a full time job in addition to a family. Some working mothers are professionals while others work out of necessity. Working mothers must balance time between family and their careers.

Now that we understand the definition of each, let us examine some pros and cons to each scenario:

Pro: Less Stress Being A Stay At Home Mom:
What most people do not consider, is how important this, stay at home mom, truly is to the family. A stay at home mom is an extremely hard working woman.

They tend to everything, and it is imperative for the mother to be with her children. Think about this, the stay at home mom is no different than a manager, in the store. She keeps everything running smoothly. Less stress around the home, means less stress to the marriage or any relation, for that matter. Being a “stay at home mom” is essentially like having a job.

Things that will get done within the home:
  •  Laundry
  •  Dinner
  •  Cleaning
  •  Quality Time With Kids
  •  Bills
Con: Being Away From The Kids As A Working Mom:

I personally think it is damaging to the mother to be away from her kids, a majority of the week. The most critical developmental stages in our kids lives, is when they are between 0-5 years old. You need to ask yourself: Am I willing to let someone else raise my child throughout the majority of the developmental stages? Are you going to be ok missing certain milestones in your kids’ lives? Missing the first steps? Missing sports activities? Are you comfortable with a childcare center raising your kids? As the child gets older, they still need your presence and thoughtful teachings, especially becoming a teenager! Working long hours, is the ultimate NO! NO!, after having children.

Pro: Picking And Choosing Your Child’s Activities:

As a stay at home mom, you are able to raise your children, as you see fit. I am not saying that all childcare or activities is a bad thing. I think, being a stay at home mom, you can take your children to mommy and me type activities for socialization. I think there is a huge difference of 50 hours a week in daycare vs. 15 hours for socialization.

Con: Losing A Salary Being A Stay At Home Mom:

Stay At Home Mom
Most families stress out over losing a salary when you’re thinking of becoming a stay at home mom. When you factor everything in, you may not be taking as big a hit as you think you are.

That brings us to out next factor, cost. Childcare is extremely expensive in 2013. Is it really going to be worth it for you to go back to work? The low end cost for daycare is $15,000 yearly. If you are debating, being a stay at home mom VS. working mom, you need to run the numbers. If you are looking at a salary of $30,000 yearly – $15,000 on just daycare alone, that leaves you with $15,000. Next, factor in taxes, commuting and other work related fees, is it really worth it?

Pro: You Can Work From Home:

Some women fear, that by being a “stay at home mom,” it is a waste of their education and career they worked so hard to attain. Why not just use these skills from home? Many women use this time, to not only raise their new family, but also to launch a business from home. In 2013, you have a huge demand for work from home typing jobs, and or business platforms.
What could you potentially do from home, to make an income, while raising the kids:
  •   Start A Home Based Business
  •   Freelancer
  •   Data Entry Jobs
  •   Consulting
  •   Babysitter
  •   Teach Online Courses
  •   Monetize A Blog
  •    Babysitting
Con: Stress Level Of Trying To Do It All:

You need to really consider your stress level. Are you going to be able to handle a demanding career, children, a husband and everything else that comes along with raising your family? What is your quality of life really going to look like? What is your kids quality of life going to look like? Putting your child in a daycare center, for 30 plus hours a week, may not be the best quality of life. If you are going to be miserable, because you’re away from your kids, then it is not worth the stress.

If you are trying to take on the world you will eventually crash. It is not physically possible to do everything while raising a family. If you are extremely stressed, that stress will affect your work, husband and your kids. Think about what you personally are comfortable handling.

Pro: Being A Working Mom When Family Can Help:

If you have a family member, that is able to watch the kids for free, this might work out perfectly! This would be an ideal situation to keeping your career and being a working mom. This might be an option for you. If you have a mom that is retired, and can care for the kids, this might be an option your more comfortable with.

No matter what you choose this is not an easy decision for your family. It is something you need to think through, and make a decision, on what will be best for your family. I hope this article has helped you to make this decision a little easier.
