As life goes on and more issues come into play, we tend to forget how to manage our time. We just start trying to do everything, all at once, as soon as possible, and this to reflects on your business. (SOUNDS FAMILIAR?)

In this article, I am going to give you 5-Time Management Skills to use as a tool, to climb to your success.
Time Management Skills #1: Identify IPA’s and Separate Them From “Necessary Things” To Be Done
In business, we all have “a lot” to do or get done. However there are those entrepreneurs that seem to get it all done, be happy, and still have time for fun, family or whatever they want!
Successful entrepreneurs have learned to identify those specific activities that are Income Producing Activities (IPA’s) and do those no matter what! See, you can easily spend a bunch of time doing “stuff” that isn’t directly related to generating sales or income. And when that habit is formed, you usually feel overwhelmed, frustrated, confused, etc. The reason is because you are not totally clear on what it is you need to do to make money, directly.
In order to help alleviate those issues, identify the things that are directly tied to your income versus other things you just need to do and begin to understand how these time management skills can assist you.
For example, in my business, an IPA would be the syndication and promotion of my blog posts and lead capture pages. A necessary thing to get done would be the actual writing of the blog post itself.
Time Management Skills #2: Select A 2-hr Block Of Time Where You Work Optimally
Yep, you heard it! 2 hrs is all you really need.
See here’s the reality. Most people have not been taught time management skills for themselves in business. Instead, we were taught to go to work every day for 8-10 hours, then fit the rest of our life into the time that is left over.
So, it may seem a bit unrealistic to you, in THAT frame of mind, that you can actually work less and make more.
*TIME MANAGEMENT SKILLS*
What makes this possible is the fact that your income is no longer tied to the time you spend doing “stuff”.
At our jobs, we go to work for 8 hrs let’s just say, and we are paid for being there those 8 hours. Whether we ride the clock, spend time on the phone or actually do the job assigned, you are paid for the time you are present. If you take off, generally you are not paid for that time unless it is accumulated sick days or something like that.
In THIS world, your money isn’t tied to the time it takes you to get the job done. It is ONLY tied to the effectiveness of you reaching your ideal customer and demonstrating to them why they should buy from you.
If that takes you 1 hour, then great! If it takes you 3, that’s okay too. But to take 8 hrs to complete your IPA’s in your business means you are clouding your activities with non-IPA’s and those need to be removed.
So, select the 2-hr window during the day where you will have no interruptions, no distractions and can work focused and diligently for the entire time block.
My Production time is between 1pm -3pm, Monday-Friday, unless I have something cool I’m working on. In those cases I will also work on weekend days!
Time Management Skills #3: Create Your To-Do List Each Night
After you have identified the few IPA’s in your business, and selected the 2-hr productivity block that’s best for you, the next thing you must do is to write your IPA’s down as part of your actions for the next day.
Why do I recommend writing this list each night before going to bed?
Well, if you take the time the night before to consider what needs to be done the next business day and get it sorted out then, the next morning you are able to jump on the horse immediately and start riding! There is nothing to think about, nothing to ponder. You know what you need to do, so simply do it! That’s a time management skills class I would call 101!
In addition, this helps to build the habit of planning. As you may have heard before,
As you continue to build on the right habits, you form patterns that are successful patterns as opposed to unsuccessful ones, like procrastination.Failing to plan, is planning to fail
So take a few minutes, plan out the next day of IPA’s and give yourself a shot at being as productive and effective as you can in the time you have allotted to work your business.
Time Management Skills #4: How To Use The 2-Hr Block and Be Productive
So now that we have our IPA’s identified, our 2-hr time window blocked off and our to-do list completed, it is time to get to work and use the time management skills we have talked about already. And here’s how you are going to do it…follow along precisely.
- Take any stopwatch (I use the one on my cell phone) and set it to 60 min. Hit the start button. During this 60 min block, you are going to blow through your list of IPA’s, getting them done, efficiently. You are to focus only on the list of things you wrote down the night before and nothing else.
- Once the stopwatch goes off and those 60 min are up, STOP working. You remember when you were in school taking a test and the time was over? The teacher said “pencils down, heads up!” Right? Well it’s the same concept here. Of course there’s no teacher or boss looking over your shoulder to make sure it’s right, so you will have to be accountable to your own time!
- Rest the timer now for 10 min and start. During these 10 minutes, this is a debriefing phase for you to take a break. Do whatever you like here. Grab a snack, meditate, return a phone call, check email, whatever. Just so long as you are not “working”. Once that 10-min break timer goes off..STOP. It’s time to get back to work!
- Set the stopwatch one last time for another 60 min and start. Continue to work through your list of IPA’s over this time and remember to stay focused. No phone, no Facebook, no email, no nothing! Only IPA’s are to be done here! Once the stopwatch goes off this time, guess what, you are done working or the day!
Time Management Skills #5: Rinse and Repeat
So you have now concluded a day’s work in your business. You have also done it maybe for the first time using these types of time management skills. How does it feel to have only worked 2 hours but still have all your income producing activities done for a change?
You should now feel a sense of completion, accomplishment and happiness.
Now all you have to do is repeat steps 3 and 4 over and over and over again, making adjustments in your IPA’s where required.
Having Time Management Skills Can Change Your Life!
Once you really get good at performing your IPA’s in short spurts of time, you’ll realize that life is so much more rewarding. You’ll have more time to spend with your husband or wife, your children or even more time to simply chill if that’s what you choose to do.However, as with anything else, I cannot guarantee that you’ll be productive enough with the time management skills I shared with you to get the same results of some of our members.
